REVIVAL IN JERUSALEM

ARTICLE

A small remnant of Israel returned from their exile in Babylon to rebuild a temple in Jerusalem. But, they became sidetracked from their purpose for going and quit building. They fell further into sin by intermarrying foreign women who were inhabitants of the land.

Years later, after Ezra and Nehemiah came, the people recognized their sin and wickedness, repented and obeyed the Lord. When they heard the Word of the Lord spoken by Ezra, they wept and obeyed, and separated themselves from among the unclean relationships. (Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. II Cor. 6:17) Then, they had real revival!

     Here’s the process:

     1. They sinned.

          • Nehemiah 9:32-35:

v. 32 Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.

v. 33 Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:

v. 34 Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.

v. 35 For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou

gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.

     2. They saw their sin.

          • Nehemiah 9:2-3

v. 2 And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

v. 3 And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the Lord their God.

     3. They repented of their sin.

They saw that they had again committed the sins of their fathers, the very wickedness that had caused the Northern Kingdom earlier to be overtaken and dispersed by the Assyrians and later the Southern Kingdom overtaken and exiled to Babylon. They then repented.

          • Nehemiah 8:5-6

v. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:

v. 6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

     4. They experienced revival!

The people saw their sin, repented of their sin and were then filled with the joy of the Lord. We (like them) sin, see our sin, repent of our sin, experience revival and are filled with the joy of the Lord!
