WHAT CHURCHES DIRELY NEED

ARTICLE

So many churches in America today no longer teach their members how to have a scripturally sound, solid, Spirit-filled, Spirit-led, victorious Christian walk. They are not seeking practical spiritual application that will produce a vital, victorious, personal walk with Jesus Christ, by His Spirit.

In our day, there is something tragically missing from church pulpits, Christian books, Christian television, Christian Radio, CD’S, DVD’S, Internet, U-tube, Blogs, Twitter, Face Book and personal conversation.  Over the past 44 years of my salvation, I have watched the steady decline of this missing ingredient. During this past decade, it has practically faded into obscurity.

What is so direly needed has been replaced with everything imaginable: motivational messages, postmodern philosophies, emerging church apostasy, emotion arousing worship and, most deceiving of all, foreign spirits masquerading to perform counterfeit manifestations attributed to the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, some within the church have responded with “packages” that all sound alike and tell us what we should do, along with naturalistic “how to do it ” steps. There are moralistic appeals to dedicate your life to Christ and strive to do better. Ministers talk about “impacting” lives and better living by social and moralistic activism. There are messages on commitments and dedication, but the proclamation of this vital, missing ingredient is scarcely, if ever, mentioned.  Without it, there is a blatant disregard for genuine, scriptural salvation and scriptural sanctification.

Occasionally, some toes may be “stepped on” to cause congregations to believe they have heard serious preaching of God’s Word. Most preachers today all sound alike, especially on Christian radio and television. Like stage actors, they bring their cloned messages with little to no scriptural content or real spiritual life. The true, age old gospel of Jesus Christ is not given.  Instead, they preach a predictable, mechanically contrived, content-less dramatization of offense-less, inspirational, motivational fluff.

The gospel we need to hear proclaimed is one that is life empowered through genuine repentance, genuine grace, genuine faith, bringing about true salvation by genuine rebirth. It’s the gospel that will issue you into the true sanctified, faith motivated, love generated, Scripture illuminated, flesh crucified, Spirit-filled, victorious Christian life. But, before we can delve into what this is and what scripturally and spiritually breathes life and liberty, we must agree that something is wrong and agree on what that something is.

There are church movements afoot today calling for reformation to restore what has been lost from the church—but will the reformation movement, with its call for the church to return to Puritan principles and doctrine, fix it? Valiant as these movements may be, they still miss the vital ingredient. In the past, there’s been no lack of prophecy preaching, but that hasn’t fixed it. The same goes for messages on spiritual gifts, healing and prosperity—still no fix. Mega church mentality, motives and methods haven’t brought it. Maybe the answer lies in the recent surge in apologetics with its ever growing intelligent design teachings? Maybe this can be turned into a science and, by such, put creation teaching back into the schools. Necessary as some of this is, it has become center stage for intellectualism and philosophical leanings that are affecting churches, even causing members to believe that because of this emphasis, they are elevated to a spiritual plane, to the extent that this emphasis can become a substitute for the missing ingredient. For its good intentions, it can be found actually substituting a pseudo-spiritual air of what they believe is deepened spirituality, But, this again leaves Christianity with the vital ingredient ignored.

Something is still missing. Maybe what the church in America needs today is to be found in Pentecostalism or charismatic movements?  But again, the best of  intentions are so affected by faulty theology that it brings distortion and confusion, not only regarding Christian sanctification, but with the very heart of the gospel—the genuine doctrine of salvation.

True, it is better to have a thing and call it wrong, than to call it right but not have it. But, this doesn’t justify faulty teaching and all the confusion that comes with it. Granted the charismatic movement has brought back some needed spiritual truths, but the problem is that truth out of balance will always be error. So then, what is missing? What is it that was prevalent 100 years ago, even 50 years ago, which has virtually become non-existent

today?

There are so many church programs and sophisticated Sunday School age groups: older than 20 with 2 children; younger than 30 with children under 5; 45 to 55 years old with teenagers; singles; singles again; married; divorced; married again; college and career; youth…ad infinitum. To walk the polished hallways of a large mega church educational building leaves you feeling like you are at some large corporate headquarters. Their technology is elaborate, with highly trained personnel to make it function. There are mega-church mentalities with seeker friendly philosophies, all in the name of community outreach and “evangelism”.  Shame on preachers who don’t have rear screen projection with power point. The gymnasium, the family life center, the cafeteria, the coffee café…all resemble the trappings of an elaborate country club, tax deductible. With an attractive setting, there’s now a sanctuary overflowing with “professing” believers.

Something terrible has happened and can’t (won’t) be corrected by any of the above. It won’t be changed by church government or employing church discipline, or any other program, as needed as these are. And, God help us, it won’t come by way of the languishing “laughing ministry” or the Toronto Blessing.

Skeptical? Another come on? Another charlatan? Breathe easy, what we at Understanding His Way Ministry are talking about is scripturally sound, age-old, well proven by the lives and ministries of saints now home. You won’t be taken out on a fringe or off into another movement. But, yes, it is a voice crying in the wilderness. Not crying new movement, new way, but crying “Come back!” Return to His way; return to what has always been God’s way for truly born again believers.

When we say what it is, you will either shout for joy or click us off. If you are hungry for it, if your soul is feeling a famine for it, you will feel like you have found an oasis in a parched desert.

So here it is, that missing thing, that void in the church, that empty hole in your hungering soul. It has been called by many descriptive phrases by believers through the ages: the “Victorious Christian Life”, “Deeper Life”, “Life on the Higher Plane”, “Triumphant Life”, “Crucified Life”, “Ascended Life”.  At Understanding His Way Ministry, we focus on this aspect: the “Expected Christian Life;” the “Normal Christian Life”.  In God’s Word, we see it called, “The Spirit-Filled Christian Life”. (Eph. 5:18)

We focus on this aspect of its being “Expected or Normal,” because it is simply the life that God has provided for us as His children and expects normal Christians to live. To do so is not to live an abnormally higher, better or deeper life than the Lord tells us in His Word He expects and has provided for every Christian. Not living this life does not mean you are not a normal Christian, but a sub-normal one. There is a plethora of

sub-normal “styles of Christian living” today, which are not the biblical Spirit-filled, normal Christian life, but one carried on in the strength of the flesh, bolstered by worldly Madison Avenue tactics.

The Church is lacking Bible based, biblically balanced, Scriptural teaching regarding the Spirit-filled life. Subsequently, the Church lacks application of the Spirit-filled life. Why all the substitutes? Because of the cost. This ingredient calls for a life of renunciation (to renounce things of the world), surrender (surrender whole heartedly to the Lordship of Christ) and Submission (submit to the will of God). The true, Spirit-filled life means living by faith. In a nut shell—“let go and let God!”  [The books, workbooks, DVD’s and studies offered by Understanding His Way Ministry are meant to bring both the Spirit-filled life and scriptural balance to the forefront.]

In this day of doctrinal extremes, Scriptural balance is vital.  Present day distortions and exaggerations of scripture are what have led us to coin the phrase, “Biblical balance in a day of extremes”.  Articles pertaining to balance, controversial topics in today’s church and sound teaching on the Spirit-filled life can be found on, Understanding His Way Ministry on Facebook, Don Imgrund on Twitter.

We pray that, through these books, workbooks and DVD’s, your knowledge, faith and practical application of the victorious Christian life may grow. Then, with this, you will more richly and fully enjoy the love, peace and adventure of being carried by God. As you walk out this victorious Christian life of dead-reckoning to sin and live reckoning to God by the power of His Spirit, may you marvel at what faith can do.
